November 15, 2014Creative Market’s Big Bundle III
November 15, 2014Oman as a country has evolved a great deal over the recent past. There has been rapid and exponential growth throughout the system. More and more companies are becoming aware of the importance of an online presence. Companies both big and small are actively pursuing web designers and social media marketers to get them online. There are more and more design agencies moving into web and digital media to capture the open market. Freelance web designers run rampant all over town. So this all seems great as it is, there is demand and there is supply, so what’s wrong? Web design in Oman is not where it should be.
The Problem
Unfortunately, there is a lot wrong with the way things are going and that is mainly down to a distinct lack of knowledge. Lack of knowledge with what the web’s capabilities are and the way the web can help a business. But most importantly the lack of understanding how bad web design can actually do more harm than good. “It’s just a website” is the phrase most commonly thrown around especially when it’s time to get a quote. Companies are unwilling to spend on quality work and want to spend as little as possible on their websites. This has led to a whole stream of web designers without experience or fundamental understanding of web concepts that do not follow best design practices offering their services for cheap.
There are whole web design agencies that; do not have websites, have websites listed but with expired domains, have broken links and loss of formatting half way through their websites and many claims that are totally false. They offer a low quality job at unreasonable prices, but most companies still seem to be ignorant to what they’re actually getting.
The Solution
More companies need to be aware of what a website can realistically do for them. Invest a good amount of money in people that have sound knowledge in web technologies and can help you. Do not be afraid to hire a freelancer. Your freelancer does not have to be your web designer, but can be your consultant through the process. Leave the technical aspect of your website to them and have them follow up with your chosen design agency to come up with a design that is not just appealing but also conforms to the latest web standards and meets the web’s technical requirements.
