The Muscat Speedway 24 Hours Karting is back. This is the second edition of Oman’s biggest karting event. This endurance event is a highlight in Oman’s motorsporting calendar. Teams from Oman and around the GCC will battle it out to win the coveted title and competition gets quite fierce. After all, up for grabs is a spot at the Sodi World Series (SWS) Finals in France. Last year the Batelco team from Bahrain took top honors, and I’m sure the local teams are up for the challenge and with better strategies to keep the title in Oman.

It may seem simple enough driving a wee little lawnmower engine powered vehicle around a track but believe me it takes a lot more skill than mowing your lawn. Go-karts are bare bone driving units with very little technological adulteration. The chassis itself is the body, the frame and suspension. Driving a go-kart efficiently around a track tests a drivers most basic skills. Proper acceleration, braking and cornering are are key to getting the most out of your go-kart.

All that concentration and skill is put to the test when you have to drive for multiple hours at a time. On average, a driver might have to drive between two to four consecutive hours. This is far from easy, I’ve been there and done that. By the end of a session you’re usually left bruised, aching, dehydrated. You’re usually left both mentally and physically exhausted. And more likely than not, you’re going to have to do more than one session (unless you have a very large team).

If you’re not into being left knackered and are just in it for the fun, visit the event and take part in the off-track festivities. Or visit the Oman Automobile Association to try out karting and get some laps in.
